Happy anniversary to my honey

Whoda thunk 37 years ago we would be wearing masks and going through this mess

This masked man......is it the Lone Ranger?
Stood next to me and pledged to be my partner for better or worse

He cleans up pretty good right?
Lol
Love him with all my heart

This guy does too

Even though its our anniversary we probably wont be celebrating by going to dinner

Pizza just doesnt seem special enough

Or having flowers delivered even though we can do that

I dont want to be frivolous and put delivery people at risk

We are still going up in number of covid cases here

So we will have a quarantineiversary and stay home reminiscing about the past 37 years and hoping for many more.

Happy anniversary Babe

I need to focus

Focusing these days is difficult
Our state is still climbing in covid numbers as more people catch this horrible virus.

I am trying to not look at numbers but also need to be aware of what is going on

I get concerned with the food supply as more and more companies close and clean tainted factories
My sister in law informs me not to worry
She has a cow in her freezer along with lamb and other meat and a huge garden we can all share
I am lucky that way but worry still.....its in my makeup

I came across these colorful blocks made of 1.5 squares
Somewhere i also have them made in 2.5 blocks
Maybe i can combine them into one bright quilt
I think i was doing these as RSC blocks one year and did make a few baby quilts but it is not my style to make rainbow bright quilts
I am not even sure why these were started but they were , so it is  better to use them on a project

This guy was also started and i love the simplicity of it
Just scrappy lights and blues
Zigzagging along
I think i need to make it larger
I am seeing a cute couch quilt for cold winter nights

Trying to focus on FINISHES and PURPOSE
how are you doing?

Right church wrong pew

These 4 blocks are for my Edyta quarantine quilt

But.....when I went to lay them out I needed 8 for the next step
Sooooo back to the diagram again and I realized that I had skipped block 5

DUH...
how does that happen?

Corona brain I guess

The block i was SUPPOSED to make finishes the outer row

Oh well. No harm no foul right?
Once i do the correct blocks i can be "ahead"

I cant wait to see this one done
It is so pretty and in my colors  of blue

Almost wish i used all shades of blue but pink is ok
I dont have her dark print with the green in it either so mine could look different
I am scraping the scraps for pink lol
Its all good

Remember this?

This day of butterfly play resulted in one block
One butterfly

I added borders.......
Slabbed a back......
Found lining fabric

Quilted the piece and voila

One cute zippy bag

The scrappy back

The inside

That project is off my sewing desk and into the gift tote

Feels good to get something done

How are you doing?

Shhhhh. Dont tell

Remember these?
Well I decided to sit and sew a bunch of 9 patches with them.
Then sewed in rows of 4
And made a new quilt top for Dunkin for Christmas

Hmmm. Wonder what he will think.
Dont tell him it is for him

He was checking out the colors

Then doing a roll test

Hmmm looks comfy enough to snuggle in

I think when it is quilted and bound he will like it.

Can you keep the secret?
I dont think he has learned to read yet

Hee hee

Hooray for the weekend

The weekend is here.
As i look around my sewing room i find this quilt i so want to finish.its a baby quilt and just needs to be quilted.
I started to quilt it and stopped

The stitching needs to be ripped out
I want to stitch it in straight or organic lines
Following the squares linear lines.
But the machine I want to use is not working

It may become a hand quilting project
We will see

So i moved on......and my butterfly block said it wanted to be a zippy bag
So i added borders and will find lining fabric and quilt er up before making the bag.
Maybe a cute floral.....we will see
I dont think i have any prints with butterflies

Then i was straightening up and realized that the 1.5 and 2.5 containers are pretty full.
That means more playtime needed
Hmmmm......
Maybe those 5 inch blocks will become a long term project

They still arent talking to me

I need to find a tin or container so that they can be stored as I make them

The fabrics range from 1980s to batik to what have you.
Florals, solids, polka dots you name it
I love it

But do you See?
Once i complete cutting a project I try and tame the remaining  pieces by cutting them into my containers

1.5, 2, 2.5, 3 and 3.5
If i can get a 5 inch i will cut that too

Came in really handy when i was doing my chandelier blocks.
I needed one 3.5 and 2 matching 2 inch and then background strips of light

I really need to tame this mess. I was pawing through all the time to make these

And boy did I make a mess!

Hopefully Dunkin will help me get it straightened out.
Are you sewing this weekend?

All things are possible

Once someone knows you sew and have a stash, these become never ending
I dont mind except I worry about killing another machine.
Ughhhh
A gal at the corporate office where I work wanted to know if I knew anybody that was sewing these.
I told her what  i now tell others.....i will make you one or two but I am not mass producing them like I was in the beginning.
List count how many I have made
I dont charge for them

As long as I had the supplies I would make them

And this is my mantra
If you believe, it is possible

I made two more that are not in this photo
Mine are not fancy
No nose piece
No pocket for filter
Just a shield against others breathing on you

Oh corona corona
My pfaff  and my white
Making these masks
Got into a fight

They were cut with elastic
All ready to go
But something was wrong
The machine was so slow

The needles would break
From the thick layers of cloth
The fab went south
The needle went north.

I seized them both up
They had had it you see
So now only small orders
Of one, two or three

My singer is old
And more mature i think
She is handling them well
Cross my fingers, wink wink.

Hip to be square

These little blocks made up of 1.5 squares
Surrounded by strips and trimmed to 5 inches
Are addictive

I sew the 1.5 squares up as leaders and enders
When i got a little pile i sewed on borders

Then trimmed them to 5 inches

Not sure if they will be surrounded by  white to float them
Or setting them on point
With alternating back ground squares

But i dont need to make any decisions today

Just sew and have fun.
Not sure yet if this wants to be a doll quilt
Or larger for a baby quilt

Or........
It hasnt talked to me yet

A little slabbing

A little slabbing sewing was on the agenda

Just mindless sewing

Putting scraps into larger pieces

I will then square them up into blocks
And sew them into  quilts

It is my stress quilting style
Grab n go
Work is busy which is good
So I do my thing 6 feet away and clean surfaces and myself when i get home.
Its a whole new world
Ever talk on a cb through a mask?
Its fun.....not lol
Nobody can understand you
But the truck drivers have been staying away as much as possible and getting their
Tickets thru my window at a distance

Stressful times these are
So I am slabbing away at the scrap piece pile seeing what i will make

Counting my blessings

I have quarantine friends who play driveby games with me

I have plenty

To keep

Me busy.....

I am loved by this guy

I dont need a florist
I have my daffys to cheer me

I have a quarantine buddy so i am not alone

I started back to work nervously
But have to look at my blessings

Are you blessed???

Chandelier

Made 14 more chandelier blocks

Its amazing once they are cut
And ready to go at how fast you can sew em up

I now need to cut the 3.5 center and 2 inch corners out of fabric scraps
I pin the sets together then cut the 2 inch strips for the lights

Once they are cut out it becomes a leader ender chain piecing mania at the machine
Resulting in smoke and blocks done
Ha ha

Little by little this quilt is growing and i cant wait until it is big enough for my bed

What's going on in your sewing room?

Snow and other things

We got snow. Ughhhh

Was so beautiful and then BAM
cold
Brrrrr
Wet
Ugh

So whats a gal to do????
Hmmmm

For a pinterest junkie like me
My name is Dawn and I am addicted LOL
anywho.....there was this pin that caught my eye

It was called a pocket quilt
Made with four 1.5 squares
And a cross inside
There is a  poem involved too
So when you need to feel God's presence
You place your hand in your pocket and can trace and feel the cross and pray and be reminded of the sacrifice of His son for us

I sewed up a few because I think a few friends I know could use one.

How cute are they? Waiting for the crosses that I need to find
And stitched closed and the poem put on

Another little way to reach out to others
In these crazy times.

Are you making anything to support others besides masks?

Water pie

I was on pinterest looking for new recipe ideas
You know how you get what the store has not what you need to make a recipe so its a game right?

What can i make with the ingredients i have that we may want to eat. Have you played that game yet???

Jacky and i got a good laugh. I guess in depression times someone came up with a water pie
Yep pie filling made of water and not much more

I almost want to try it just to see
How does that work? Is it edible? Really?
Its economical for sure ha ha ha

Because resources were so scarce during the Great Depression, people found clever tricks to make a little seem like a lot. Some of those tricks bordered on magic, like in this Water Pie, where water is the main ingredient and yet somehow you end up with a pie that’s creamy and sweet and totally indulgent. It uses just a few pantry ingredients but still manages to feel like a special treat.
When you saw the name Water Pie, you might have thought that it was cooked in a water bath, or that water was somehow involved in the cooking method, but no, water really is the main ingredient. It gets poured into a pie crust…
… and then a mixture of flour, sugar, and salt gets sprinkled over the top. A little vanilla gets drizzled over that…
… but the final flourish is a few pats of butter, which gives the pie a straightforward sweet and buttery flavor.
Even though you don’t stir anything together, as it bakes the ingredients come together to form a filling that’s creamy and almost custardy in texture. When there wasn’t enough to go around, this pie surely made the hard days seem a little sweeter.

Depression Era Water Pie

Serves 8; 1 hour 15 minutes
INGREDIENTS
  • 1 deep dish 9-inch pie crust, unbaked
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 5 tablespoons butter, sliced
PREPARATION
  1. Preheat oven to 400°F.
  2. Place pie crust on a baking sheet and pour the 1 1/2 cups water into the pie crust.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and salt. Sprinkle evenly over water in the pie crust, but do not stir.
  4. Drizzle vanilla over the pie, then evenly place pats of butter over the top.
  5. Bake for 30 minutes. Reduce heat to 375°F and continue baking for 30 more minutes. Cover crust with foil if browning too quickly.
  6. Pie will be watery but will set up as it cools. Allow to cool to room temperature, then place in fridge to chill before slicing. Enjoy!
